Bio

The journey of Double AA and his love of music began at a very young age. His passion for music stems from his upbringing. Being East Indian, his dad had a vast collection of LP’s, cassettes, and even 8 tracks of traditional Bhangra/Punjabi music. However, he also had his fair share of cheesy disco, pop, and whatever he thought was cool! The basement in the house was dedicated to speakers, various electronic gadgets, and his dad’s entire musical collection. This is where DAA spent his early years, messing around with whatever was handy.

At an early age his interest in music was mainly in pop and the mainstream, since that’s all he saw and had access to. Then around 1990 he became more exposed to the sounds of R&B, Soul, House, and also Hip-Hop. Some of his early favorites included New Edition (Bobby Brown & Bell Biv Devoe specifically), and Hip-Hop artists such as Heavy & The Boyz, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Nas, EPMD, Tribe, MC Lyte, and De La Soul.

DAA’s biggest musical influence was college radio DJ’s on local stations such as CIUT and CKLN in Toronto. He became immersed in the then underground Hip-Hop scene that was developing in the U.S., more specifically the east coast sound from NYC.

Around the age of thirteen DAA showed a big interest in wanting/learning to DJ. He started by messing around with mixing cassettes, which resulted in some horrible mixes! He used to sit with his old Sony double cassette tape deck, and try to take breaks in songs to make his own instrumentals; long before samplers and software. Finally he saved all of his hard earned money to get his first pair of turntables in 1993, the day every aspiring DJ remembers, your first pair of Tech 12’s!

He then started to DJ local events, school dances, house parties and even hosting freestyle battles in basements. His mix tapes began to circulate locally which helped him build his reputation. He got a big break back then through his good friend DJ Moonstarr, who got both of them on “The DJ Mix At 6” on the then Energy 108 FM. Also at that time the Asian/Indian scene of the UK was beginning to crossover into North America. DAA dabbled in this briefly by doing his own remix tapes, which went on to sell almost 10,000 copies around Canada and parts of the U.S.

However his true has love has always been Hip-Hop. He has dj’d for over 15 years at all the major clubs in Toronto, holding residencies at many of the urban hot spots. He has also been on the university circuit playing everywhere from Toronto to Montreal. DAA has held regular rotation on live to air radio on stations such as WBLK 93.7 (Buffalo, NY) and FLOW 93.5 FM (Toronto).

His musical knowledge is second to none and he has the vinyl collection to prove it. His favorite genres by far are Old School & Hip-Hop. He is also a big follower of House and R&B. Basically he loves music, it comes down to two turntables and a mixer for him.

Some of DAA’s musical influences include Timbaland, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Puff Daddy, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and Teddy Riley. DAA’s journey has taken him full circle. He now primarily concentrates on hosting his own events where he gets to play the type of music he likes, (not the wack sh*t that’s out there) for audiences that really appreciate it. He does this with his ‘Phunk'd’ & ‘The 4MLA’ line of parties, as well as ‘Luv To Bhang’. All of these events cater to niche audiences that have a true appreciation of music.

His focus now is on producing. He is refining his skills as a producer, and he spends most of his time in his studio dubbed the “The Crate”. He incorporates many different styles and elements into his music. Growing up with Hip Hop, R&B, House, Soul, Top 40, and traditional East Indian Music, he uses all of them as an inspiration to making phunky, cool, live, and moving music.
